Top Africans earned their quotas for Paris 2024 in Dakar

The finals will be held at the African Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Dakar, Senegal today but 10 female boxers already earned their quotas for Paris 2024 during the semi-finals.

Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam earned several African titles and medals from the main events since 2017 therefore she was one of the favourites for the spots at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) and Morocco’s Yasmine Mouttaki’s success is also an expected quota.

Egypt’s Yomna Ahmed Rezk Abdalla Ayyad earned a surprise quota at the women’s bantamweight (54kg), she defeated a highly-decorated Algerian. Widad Bertal of Morocco made a revenge against Sierra Leone’s Sara Haghighat-Joo due to her previous loss and she earned the second quota in this weight class.

Tunisia’s best female boxer, Khouloud Hlimi and DR Congo’s Marcelat Sakobi Matshu (57kg) both were Tokyo Olympians and after their victories, they will be able to compete in Paris next year.

Algeria’s African Champion Hadjila Khelif and Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games silver medallist Cynthia Ogunsemilore both dominated their lightweight (60kg) semi-finals and deserved to get their tickets to Paris.

Algeria’s No.1, Imane Khelif and Mozambique’s Alcinda Panguane both were medallist in the 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championships and the two stars achieved their quotas at the women’s welterweight (66kg) easily.

The eight remaining African spots for the Olympics to be decided after the women’s middleweight (75kg) and all of the men’s finals today.
