Andrews and Marin are the best boxers at the Rodriguez Cal U22 Memorial Tournament
England, France, Spain, Wales, Scotland and the neutral athletes claimed the gold medals at the Enrique Rodriguez Cal U22 Memorial Tournament in Palencia, Spain which was the first historic edition for the young hopes.
Altogether 73 boxers including ten girls competed for the 14 titles in the Enrique Rodriguez Cal U22 Memorial Tournament which is new in the boxing map but the Spanish Boxing Federations plans to continue the tradition.
The competition was named by Spain’s first ever Olympic medallist, Enrique Rodriguez Cal who claimed bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics and he also had impressive results in the 1st World Boxing Championships and the Mediterranean Games.
Wales’ hard-working talent, Zoe Andrews, the Commonwealth Games competitor advanced to the final of the women’s bantamweight (54kg) and she felt the rhythm in the first round well against England’s Beth Walsh.
The referee counted Walsh twice in the second round and Andrews looked highly confident in the final minutes as well to win this final contest in Palencia. She was named as the best female boxer of the 1st Enrique Rodriguez Cal U22 Memorial Tournament.
A currently neutral boxer, Edwart Marin reached impressive results representing Cuba at the 2021 youth competitions proving his talent. He was quarter-finalist at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships and after the event he decided to stay in Spain and left the Cuban team.
The 19-year-old boxer has a brilliant technique and he showed his skills in the final of the featherweight (57kg) against Wales’ Owain Harris-Allan. Marin counter-attacked several times effectively the bronze medallist from the last Commonwealth Games and he made a remarkable performance in the last competition day. Marin was named as the Best Male Boxer of the U22 international tournament.
