Ecuador is aiming for Olympic spots at the Panamerican Games
Ecuador competes with 10 boxers at the Panamerican Games which is the highlight of the second part of October in the boxing calendar.
Ecuador is a promising country, their boxing life turned into a new era in the 2000s when their boxers began to qualify for the Olympic Games.
Ecuador earned 1 gold, 5 silver and 9 bronze medals in the event’s history but the country achieved most of their best results in the previous 15 years.
The Ecuadorian girls had strong achievements in the recent three and half years and the country’s management selected four women talents to the Games.
Susan Meyli Aguas (50kg), Helen Sanchez (54kg, the Olympian Maria Jose Palacios (60kg) and the 20-year-old Ingrith Maldonado (75kg) all claimed medals in various international competitions during their career.
Luis Delgado was involved to the elite national team at the age of 19 following his excellent youth career and he is now a medal favourite at the men’s flyweight (51kg).
Jean Caicedo has 13 years of experience in the national team and the Tokyo Olympian boxer is planning to qualify to his second Games at the men’s featherweight (57kg).
Ecuador did not send anyone at the light welterweight (63.5kg) but one of their most advanced male boxers, Jose Rodriguez will cover the light middleweight (71kg) in the Panamerican Games.
Abel Mina returned from the professional world and he had nearly 400 contests during his career which means he could be one of the most experienced boxers at the men’s light heavyweight (80kg) in Santiago de Chile.
Julio Castillo was silver medallist in the 2019 World Boxing Championships but altogether he has more than 15 years of experience in the national team. The veteran heavyweight (92kg) boxer still has the speed and strength to be one of the favourites for the Olympic quotas.
Ecuador’s new super heavyweight (+92kg) sensation, Gerlon Congo is only 22-year-old but he represented the country in the recent two editions of the World Boxing Championships.
