Finland’s youngsters as Kaivo-Oja and Viitanen won the titles at the 43rd Tammer Tournament
The 43rd edition of the Tammer Tournament was held in Tampere, Finland at the Pyynikki Sport Hall which is the regular venue of this prestigious competition.
Finland’s boxing officials as Ms. Anna Laukkanen and her father, Mr. Aarno Laukkanen are the engines of the Tammer Tournament and its success.
Tampere is a real boxing city in Finland, it hosted one of the World Boxing Championships, and the European Boxing Championships in the past.
Finland’s excellent boxing duo such as Pihla Kaivo-Oja and Vilma Viitanen both earned gold medals in the Tammer Tournament and the two U22 European medallists defeated their rivals such as England’s Demie-Jade Resztan and Sameenah Toussaint.
England’s Charley Davison was a Tokyo Olympian who bagged the title at the recent Finnish competition, the Gee Bee in Helsinki, and she reached the top of the podium in Tampere as well, after beating Emma Jokiaho of Finland at the bantamweight (54kg).
Wales’ Commonwealth Games winner Rosie Eccles have already qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the 27-year-old boxer used the Tammer Tournament as her preparation to next year’s main event. Eccles not only exceeded Finland’s Krista Kovalainen’s level but the referee stopped the bout in the third round due to her heavy shots.
Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad, the Youth World Champion, is only 19-year-old but one of the top hopes at the women’s middleweight (75kg) which she proved against England’s Cindy Ngamba in the final of the Tammer.
The Germans impressed in the Tammer Tournament, three of their male finalists claimed gold medals in Tampere. Salah Ibrahim (51kg), Magomed Schachidov (71kg) and the European Champion Nelvie Tiafack (+92kg) all succeeded in Finland.
England’s Ramtin Musah (80kg) and Patrick Brown (92kg) both have been fighting to be No.1 in the GB Team and they made a strong step for that after beating their German and Nigerian rivals in Tampere.
