Jermall Charlo returns with a unanimous decision win over Jose Benavidez
Jermall Charlo (33-0) has ended his 29-month layoff on Saturday night. In Las Vegas on Saturday night the unbeaten WBC middleweight champion defeated Jose Benavidez (28-3-1) by unanimous decision in their 10-round super-middleweight fight.
Judges Max De Luca (100:90), Dave Moretti (99:91) and Zachary Young (98:92) all scored the fight in favor of Charlo.
For Charlo it was the first fight since he defeated Mexican Juan Macas Montiel in June 2021.
Charlo cause controversy on Friday’s weighin. He was 1.5 kg overweight. The agreed weight was 73.9 kg but Charlo was near 75.5 kg.
Fight was in jeopardy but the representatives of both team’s came to an agreement and Charlo paid penalties out of his purse to Benavidez.
After the win on Saturday night, Charlo promised to be back stronger next year.
“I’ll be back stronger, just know that. I thought about everything that I’ve been through every round. God’s got me,” Charlo said. “I really want to thank the WBC for standing with me and going through what I went through with me, Mauricio [Sulaimán] and the whole team. I want to thank everybody who never left my side. I want to thank Al Haymon for understanding me. I know when you’re a man it’s hard to explain to somebody what you stand for, but I’m happy that I went through what I went through because I showed myself that anything can be done. And it is what it is”.
