Teremoana dominated the super heavyweight in the Pacific Games

The Australians dominated the last competition day at the Pacific Games in Honiara, Solomon Islands where all of their six boxers won their finals and have qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Samoa’s Ato Plodzicki Faoagali was the only boxer out of Australia who could earn an Olympic spot in the Pacific Games. Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Niue and Fiji won gold medals in the non-Olympic weight categories.

Altogether 39 female and 107 male boxers competed for the 25 titles in this multisport event which is hosts every four years.

American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, North Caledonia, Niue, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu were participating at the Pacific Games in Honiara.

Australia’s best male boxer, Harry Garside walked over to the gold medal, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist qualified for his next Games after Fiji’s Elia Rokobuli was unable to box in the day of the finals.

Australia’s Shannan Davey was not the top favourite in the light middleweight (71kg) final against New Zealand’s Wendell Stanley but he used the best strategy against his tall opponent and defeated the Kiwi boxer.

Monique Suraci had impressive progress this year and he had the fantastic and energetic performance in the day of the finals against New Zealand’s Tasmyn Benny at the women’s light flyweight (50kg).

Australia’s Teremoana Teremoana is a new super heavyweight (+92kg) star, the new face in the national team impressed in all of the preparation competitions in 2023 and he stopped his Samoan rival in the second round of the final.

Those Oceanian boxers who did not qualify for Paris 2024 through the Pacific Games, will be able to fight for the further spots in the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio, Italy which will be starting on February 29 in 2024.
