GB selected 10-strong team to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifier
The 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event will be held in Busto Arsizio, Italy from February 29 and among the top teams, Great Britain has selected its line-ups to the event.
Great Britain qualified three boxers to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games through the recent European Games: Charley Davison (women’s 54kg), the Welsh Rosie Eccles (women’s 66kg) and Delicious Orie (men’s +92kg).
Their 10-strong team contains four women and six men boxers who have been selected based on their performances in the previous months including the GB Open which opened the year of 2024.
The Commonwealth Games semi-finalist Savannah Stubbley will replace the European silver medallist Demi-Jade Resztan at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) following a narrow success over her main rival at the GB Open.
The European Games competitors, the multiple international tournament winners Elyse Glynn (57kg) and Shona Whitwell (60kg) both remained in the female squad for the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.
A former Youth World bronze medallist, Chantelle Reid returned to the sport after seven years of break and she was selected to represent Team GB at the women’s middleweight (75kg) in Busto Arsizio.
The European Championships silver medallist Kiaran MacDonald (51kg) and Jack Dryden (57kg) impressed in the previous international events. The top Welsh male boxer, Taylor Bevan also competed at the European Games and he received the right to represent Team GB once again.
Patris Mughalzai is a new addition to the team who made sensational results in the last six months at the light welterweight (63.5kg).
One of their most experienced male boxers, the 27-year-old Lewis Richardson, another European silver medallist, moved down to the light middleweight (71kg) and he has strong chance to qualify for Paris.
Patrick Brown will be the new heavyweight (92kg) boxer in the team who amazed at the Tammer Tournament, Bocskai Memorial and finally he received the chance to compete for Team GB.
