Team Ireland selected eight boxers to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifier

The 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event will be held in Busto Arsizio, Italy from February 29 until March 12 and record number of teams are ready to earn quotas for Paris 2024.

Team Ireland also selected its squad which contains three female and five male boxers following the country bagged five quotas at the European Games.

Mr. Zaur Antia, the High Performance Head coach, selected the team and he had hard job in a few weight categories due to the high number of top athletes.

The energetic Daina Moorehouse won the recent National Championships and the former youth star was selected to represent Ireland at the light flyweight (50kg) once again.

Jennifer Lehane surprisingly defeated the European U22 Champion Niamh Fay and the bantamweight (54kg) boxer was near to get a spot already at the European Games in Krakow, Poland last summer.

The National Champion Grainne Walsh was named as Team Ireland’s boxer at the women’s welterweight (66kg) where the country has two fantastic World Champions, Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke as well.

Sean Mari competed for Ireland in all of the major championships at the flyweight (51kg) in this Olympic cycle and the 24-year-old boxer has the routine to beat world class rivals.

Jude Gallagher earned a gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and despite his young age, he has also the routine to achieve a spot for Paris 2024 at the men’s featherweight (57kg).

Aidan Walsh is another Commonwealth Games winner, he has strong potential at the light middleweight (71kg) in Busto Arsizio but Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Brazil, Great Britain, Ukraine, and many of the top nations did not qualify boxers yet in this category.

Kelyn Cassidy made several surprises in the previous years at the light heavyweight (80kg) while Martin McDonagh (+92kg) is the eighth team member for the Qualifier.

The third and final quota event, the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event will take place in Bangkok, Thailand from May 23.
