Italy approved its squad for the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifier

Italy named and announced its squad for the upcoming 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held in Busto Arsizio, Italy from March 3.

Italy earned four quotas for the Paris Olympics through the European Games, their Giordana Sorrentino (women’s 50kg), Irma Testa (women’s 57kg), Salvatore Cavallaro (men’s 80kg) and Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine (men’s 92kg) achieved these spots.

The Italians competed at the Boxam Elite Tournament in Spain and they spent the recent weeks in an international training camp in Assisi.

Sirine Charaabi is a European U22 Champion boxer at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) who has all of the potential to win a quota in Busto Arsizio.

Alessia Mesiano became World Champion in 2016 and she has the routine to win key contests at the women’s lightweight (60kg) where she was selected instead of Rebecca Nicoli after her gold medal at the Boxam.

The strong Angela Carini is also an experienced boxer at the women’s welterweight (66kg) while Melissa Gemini (75kg) is their youngest female team member with youth and U22 results on her career.

Federico Serra competes mostly at the bantamweight (54kg) but due to the Qualifier, he moved down to the flyweight (51kg). The European Games bronze medallist veteran is in strong shape, he won the recent Boxam Tournament with an impressive performance.

Francesco Iozia replaced Michele Baldassi at the featherweight (57kg) and he has eleven years of international experience from all levels of boxing.

Gianluigi Malanga had several medals in the U22 age group and his decision to move back to the light welterweight (63.5kg), was successful.

Salvatore Cavallaro II, the younger light middleweight (71kg) boxer was named again to the Italian squad and he will represent the country in a record-breaking event.

Diego Lenzi has less than 40 contests during his career but the 22-year-old super heavyweight (+92kg) boxer has fantastic physical skills and he won the recent Boxam Elite Tournament in Spain.
