Legendary boxing matches – Legendary boxers: The most knockouts in boxing history

Author: Zizi

There are matches, which are never to be forgotten, and there are boxing icons who are going to stay with us for eternity.

When a fighter wins a match via KO/TKO it is never going to be questioned, was it a fair result or not. In addition, to be very honest, most people like to watch KO/TKO because it is exciting and simultaneously dramatic as well.

There were many big punchers in modern boxing history and not just from the heavyweight division. However, if you try to find the professional fighter with the most knockouts, you need to go back in time more than 100 years.

Billy Bird was quite a tough fighter from the United Kingdom. He had an impressive career with 356 official matches at the welterweight division and allegedly, he had unofficial matches to add to that as well. Billy was in the boxing business as an active fighter for 28 years, from 1920 to 1948, with a 5 years gap between the last two fights.

He won 260 matches and 139 times, he won via KOs (other sources say 138). It is hard to imagine somebody could fight over 350 bouts during his career, but Billy did.

Fun fact: Despite his notable record, Billy never won a major title in his life and actually, he fought only two times outside the British Islands. The native English athlete was the closest to a title shot in 1934, when he fought against Johnny Quill (it was an Eliminator Southern Area Welterweight Title match) but lost it via points.
