Kareem, Bertal, Commey and Kulenguluka are among the winners of the quarter-finals in Accra

Further 28 quarter-finals were held in the boxing tournament of the All Africa Games and all of the winners of these contests are guaranteed medallist in Accra, Ghana.

Nigeria’s Shukura Kareem is only 18-year-old but she amazed in Busto Arsizio and the teenage talent continued her extraordinary performance in Accra as well. Kareem eliminated Sierra Leone’s ex-Canadian boxer, the African Champion Sara Haghighat-Joo in their bantamweight (54kg) quarter-final.

Morocco’s Widad Bertal, the winner of the African Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event, also impressed in the day of the quarter-finals and her performance was enough to beat Togo’s Coletivi Yetongnon. Kenya’s Amina Martha Faki and Egypt’s Paris Olympian Yomna Ayyad are the further medallists at the women’s bantamweight (54kg).

Nigeria’s Nene Joy Ojo had a tough job against DR Congo’s Marcelat Sakobi Matshu at the women’s featherweight (57kg) but she won their meeting by 4:1 split decision. Top names such as Tunisia’s Olympian Khouloud Hlimi, Botswana’s Keamogetse Kenosi and Algeria’s Chahira Selmouni are also semi-finalists in this weight class.

Nigeria’s Dolapo Omole was a surprise gold medallist at the African Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Dakar and he is a semi-finalist at the All African Games as well. The young Nigerian knocked out Mauritius’ Niven Chemben in the quarter-finals of the men’s featherweight (57kg).

Zambia’s Albert Ngulube eliminated Botswana’s Mmoloki Sekwaipe at the featherweight (57kg) while his teammate, Andrew Chilata also marched to the semi-finals at the lightweight (60kg) after beating Sanele Sogcwayi of South Africa.

Ghana’s Joseph Commey, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist won his bout easily and he has strong chance at the lightweight (60kg). DR Congo’s Steve Kulenguluka Mbiya won one of the top fights of the day against Mozambique’s Commonwealth Games runner-up, Tiago Osorio Muxanga at the light middleweight (71kg).
