Legendary boxing matches – Legendary boxers: The youngest world champion ever

Author: Zizi

There are matches, which are never to be forgotten, and there are boxing icons, who are going to stay with us for eternity.

To be honest with you, when I was 17 years old, I did not know what I was going to do after high school. I had ideas of course, but nothing serious. But how does this connect to this article?

The answer is simple: The youngest professional world champion was only 17 years, five months, and 24 days old when he won the title. To be more accurate, Wilfred “El Radar” Benitez won the WBA light-welterweight title with a 15-round split decision victory over Antonio Cervantes in 1976 and became the youngest world champion ever.

Fun fact: Couple of friends of Benitez from high school sat near the ring, and witnessed history, when their classmate won the fight.

El Radar, whose nickname referred to his amazing defensive skills, retired from professional boxing in 1990 and five years later, was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame as one of the greatest Puerto Rican boxers.
