Legendary boxing matches – Legendary boxers: Longest reigning world champion

Author: Zizi

There are matches, which are never to be forgotten, and there are boxing icons, who are going to stay with us for eternity.

It is hard to reach the peak and to be a world champion in professional boxing and actually in any other sport. And if it is possible, it is much harder to keep the title for years, when you have to face up the challengers where everybody wants to beat the champion.

We have to go back time to find our winner, the legendary Joe Louis, who won the NYSAC, NBA, and The Ring heavyweight titles against James J. Braddock via KO in the eighth round in 1937. Then the Brown Bomber kept his titles for 11 years and 8 months, while winning 26 consecutive matches.

Joe Louis lost his titles after a two-year hiatus from the ring against Ezzard Charles on his 60th professional fight (this was his second loss). The boxing icon had 69 fights in his remarkable career, his last appearance in the ring was against Rocky Marciano, who was another legend of boxing.
