Oakley, Myllymaeki and Mueller had surprise victories in Helsinki
Kelsey Oakley, Laura Myllymaeki and Leonie Mueller delivered the main surprises on the second day at the 42nd Gee Bee Tournament in Helsinki.
Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja had a young English rival, Kelsey Oakley in the first bout of the day and she won the first round. The battle of the southpaw boxers delivered a surprise, Oakley made a great comeback in the beginning of the second and she defeated the local hero.
Czech Republic’s Claudia Totova had an excellent second round against Laura Myllymaeki but the Finnish opponent made a fantastic finish and the local girl defeated the favourite at the women’s light flyweight (50kg).
Teresa Maekinen moved back to the bantamweight (54kg) in the previous one year and she felt the tempo against Wales’ Zoe Andrews and due to her first and third rounds, she won this meeting.
Sweden’s Agnes Alexiusson had a warm-up for the final of the lightweight (60kg) against Denmark’s Caroline Lauenborg in their semi-final. Netherlands’ 19-year-old Maud Van der Toorn had a tough but successful battle against England’s Lucy Kings-Wheatley in the next bout.
Germany’s Leonie Mueller used a long-distance strategy against Wales’ Paris Olympian Rosie Eccles in the first round. The German managed to beat a top rival and she will now meet Netherlands’ Luna Beeloo for the title of the welterweight (66kg).
Wales’ newcomer in the elite national team, Axel Hegarty has only 40 bouts but the teenage talent defeated Finland’s Santeri Kemppainen by unanimous decision.
Alexander Fredriksson returned to the Swedish team after a break and he had a manly battle against Denmark’s Abdalla Abou Arab but his efforts were not enough to win today. Chinese Taipei’s Lai Chu En has qualified already for the Paris Olympics and he had a smart boxing against Finland’s Ismail Umar in the next light welterweight (63.5kg) bout.
Netherlands’ Gradus Kraus, the Dutch light heavyweight (80kg) boxer had massive combinations against Germany’s Delil Dadaev and he joined the next stage.
