Garcia stuns Haney, but misses out on WBC title for being over weight limit
Ryan Garcia (25-1) secured a stunning upset over Devin Haney (31-1), knocking his fellow American down three times en route to a majority decision victory at the Barclays Center on Saturday night.
Garcia missed the super-lightweight limit by 1.45 kg, so was not eligible to win WBC title. Title was at stake only for the champion Haney.
Haney was big favorite in this fight, but Garcia floored him three times, in rounds seven, 10 and 11, enough to earn him a majority decision win. Two judges saw him as winner (115:109 and 114:110) and one saw the fight as draw (112:112). Garcia had a point deducted in round seven.
“Come on, guys, you really thought I was crazy? You all lost your own minds,” Garcia said in his post-fight interview. “You guys overegg everything.”
Haney, the former undisputed world lightweight champion, was disappointed with his performance.
“But I showed that I can fight after a knockdown and getting hurt,” he added. “I would love a rematch. I gave him a shot, it’s only right he gives me a shot back. He didn’t make weight, so I’m still the champion. We can run it back.”
