Ireland announced its seven-strong team to the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event
The 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from May 24 until June 2 and this is the last occasion for the boxers to earn spots for Paris.
Team Ireland’s High Performance Head Mr. Zauri Antia has selected finally seven boxers to participate in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok.
The defending Olympic Champion Kellie Harrington (60kg), the Commonwealth Games winner Michaela Walsh (57kg) and the European Champion Aoife O’Rourke (75kg) are a strong trio with Olympic medals hopes in Paris.
A Commonwealth Games winner, Jude Gallagher (57kg), Dean Patrick Clancy (63.5kg) and Jack Marley (92kg) have also qualified for the Olympics in the men’s weight classes.
Enniskerry’s Daina Moorehouse was amazing as a youth boxer, she won titles and the 23-year-old boxer progressed well enough to take a quota at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) in Bangkok.
Niamh Fay is a European U22 Champion boxer but Dublin’s Jennifer Lehane developed so quickly and she will be competing for Ireland at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) again.
The women’s welterweight (66kg) is a very strong category in Ireland, the World Champion Lisa O’Rourke missed all of the qualification events, and Grainne Walsh received the right to compete for the boxing power once again.
Monkstown’s Sean Mari is Ireland best flyweight (51kg) boxer since 2021 and he has strong experiences to make surprises in Bangkok.
Belfast’s pride, Aidan Walsh achieved a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and the Commonwealth Games winner could be an ace at the men’s light middleweight (71kg).
Waterford’s 27-year-old Kelyn Cassidy had fantastic battles against the top stars of the light heavyweight (80kg) in the recent competitions and he has realistic chance to celebrate a quota in Bangkok.
Galway’s Martin McDonagh is a native talent in our sport who has very limited number of bouts but he is a strong prospect at the men’s super heavyweight (+92kg).
