Vietnam is chasing Olympic dreams in Bangkok

The 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from May 24 and this is the last opportunity for all competitors to earn quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Vietnam earned one quota for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, their Vo Thi Kim Anh qualified through the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) with fantastic performance.

One of the developing Asian countries, Boxing Vietnam has selected eleven boxers to participate in Bangkok. Their five-strong female team has strong potential to increase the number of their quotas in Bangkok.

Vietnam’s best boxers have been training in Korat Province and they know the region and the local environment well enough.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tran earned a silver medal at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships and surprisingly she was selected to participate in Bangkok instead of the two-time Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam who had several injuries in the recent one and half year.

Nguyen Huyen Tran is another young hope in their female team but she competed in the Asian Games, in the 1st World Olympic Qualifier and also in Astana a few days ago. The 31-year-old Ha Thi Linh won the Southeast Asian Games and the mother will represent Vietnam at the women’s lightweight (60kg) with quota chances.

Nguyen Van Duong earned a bronze medal at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualifying Event in Amman and he was Vietnam’s first male Olympian boxer. The 27-year-old featherweight (57kg) pugilist is famous of his extreme punching power and he could be dangerous for the best boxers as well.

Bui Phuoc Tung reached his career highlight in the Southeast Asian Games last May where he knocked out his final Thai opponent. The Southeast Asian Games silver medallist Nguyen Manh Cuong moved down to the light heavyweight (80kg) in the previous months. Nguyen Minh Cuong (51kg), Vu Thanh Dat (63.5kg) and Doan Ngoc Minh Hieu (+92kg) are their further male team members in Bangkok.
