Legendary boxing matches – Legendary boxers: The G.O.A.T. himself
Author: Zizi
There are matches, which are never to be forgotten, and there are boxing icons, who are going to stay with us for eternity.
I know, I know, I should have started my list with him, the greatest of all time, one of the most influential athletes of the 20th century: Muhammad Ali. Besides the fact he was the first heavyweight world champion, who could gain the title three times and he won an Olympic gold as well, he changed the life of millions all around the world.
We could talk for days his matches against Joe Frazier, George Foreman and for me, as a Hungarian, his clash against Joe Bugner (he was born in Hungary). But now, let me share with you three less known interesting facts in connection with him:
- He was a poet as well and he recorded a spoken word album called I Am the Greatest in 1963.
- Ali’s salary for the Sonny Liston fight, when he won the world championship title, was $630,000. Almost 50 years later an anonymous buyer bought the gloves he wore to defeat the champion for $836,000.
- Ali took to the stage in the title role of the musical “Buck White” in 1969, but this was not a long chapter of his life, because “Buck White” closed four nights later after just seven performances.
