Denis Bril, Yakelin Estornell and Camila Camilo made the show in Bangkok on Day1

The 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event started with its first preliminary day in Bangkok, Thailand and some of the youngsters made their breakthrough in the session.

Hungary’s European Championships bronze medallist Roland Veres the opened the first round with impressive performance and following his jab, the referee counted Uruguay’s Alexander Fernandez. The South American was able to turn back their featherweight (57kg) contest with a great finish.

Germany’s Denis Bril is only 20-year-old but he had already strong experience from various international competitions. The tough German featherweight (57kg) boxer progressed well enough in the previous months and his debut in Bangkok was extraordinary, he finished the job quickly against Bhutan’s Tashi Yoezer.

United States’ Alyssa Mendoza had a 16-year-older opponent, Mongolia’s Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag who claimed her first Asian title in 2012 when her US rival was only 9. The Mongolian worked hard through the three rounds but Mendoza was punctual and she won their featherweight (57kg) meeting.

Colombia’s Camila Gabriela Camilo and Mongolia’s Ganzorig Badmaarag both are still U22 boxers but with plenty of bouts during their career. The Women’s World Championships bronze medallist South American felt the tempo better and she advanced to the Round of 32 at the welterweight (66kg).

Ireland’s Grainne Walsh was favoured at the women’s welterweight (66kg) in her homeland instead of the World Champion Lisa O’Rourke therefore she looked highly motivated in her opener in Bangkok. The Irish won all of the three rounds against Vietnam’s Hoang Ngoc Mai and she proved her potential in her first preliminary contest.

The women’s boxing in Cuba is one of the new sports, their team members started to compete internationally in 2023 but their girls are stronger and better in each competition. Yakelin Estornell moved back to the women’s welterweight (66kg) and she had the skills to beat Romania’s Crinuta Andra Sebe in the evening session.
