Spain and Ireland were perfect in the third session in Bangkok
Spain’s Rafael Lozano Serrano and the Irish boxers were outstanding in the third session at the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok, Thailand.
Ireland’s Sean Mari opened the entire competition day against a younger boxer from Pakistan, Muhammad Faheem who received the right to participate internationally for the first time. The Irish controlled the exchanges in all of the three rounds and he secured his place in the Round of 32 at the men’s flyweight (51kg).
Italy’s European Games bronze medallist Federico Serra had a surprise loss in Busto Arsizio and the strong flyweight (51kg) boxer was also eliminated in Bangkok therefore he will miss the Olympic Games in Paris. Ecuador’s Luis Delgado, a 24-year-old boxer who has five years of routine in the elite national team, defeated the Italian today.
Spain’s Rafael Lozano Serrano replaced the European Champion Martin Molina in the squad at the men’s flyweight (51kg) and he deserved to win a very hectic opener in Bangkok. The 20-year-old Spaniard met Philippines’ veteran star Rogen Ladon and his energetic attacks in the last round delivered a 4:1 split decision success for Lozano Junior whose coach father is Spain’s lone two-time Olympic medallist.
Fiji’s Saratibau Aminiasi is a new addition to their national team and he looked competitive against Colombia’s Juan Diego Ortiz who reached the quarter-finals in Busto Arsizio. The Oceanian light heavyweight (80kg) boxer stepped into the gas and he won their preliminary battle by RSC in the second round.
Ireland’s Kelyn Cassidy has seven years of international experience and he had a tight loss only to Kazakhstan’s World Champion Nurbek Oralbay in the last Qualifier. The Irish kept his smaller and younger German opponent, Delil Dadaev on long successfully in the first and second rounds. The referee counted the 22-year-old Dadaev in the last round which guaranteed Cassidy’s victory in their light heavyweight (80kg) meeting.
