Finally 33 nations earned quotas for Paris through the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event

The last session has finished in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok where 33 nations shared the 51 Olympic quotas.

Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja marched into the quarter-finals in Bangkok where she met a strong rival, Nigeria’s Zainab Motunrayo Adeshina. The young Kaivo-Oja did not her African opponent too close and her hooks and stopping jabs were the key for her success in this light flyweight (50kg) quota bout which is Finland’s first for Paris.

Ireland’s Daina Moorehouse was smaller than her Bulgarian opponent, Zlatislava Chukanova but quick actions guaranteed her lead on the scorecards. Moorehouse overcame Chukanova in the attacks and despite her height advantage she boxed from longer range successfully to complete the Irish quotas in female boxing.

Fatima Patricia Herrera, who replaced their No.1 Ingrid Gomez in this Qualifier, achieved Mexico’s fourth Olympic quota in boxing after beating Canada’s McKenzie Wright.

Ireland’s Aidan Walsh had a tight loss to Jordan’s Zeyad Eshaish in the quarter-finals of the light middleweight (71kg) due to the warnings but the Tokyo bronze medallist was impressive once again in the Box-offs. The 27-year-old Commonwealth Games winner kept Puerto Rico’s Angel Llanos on long to take Ireland’s next quota.

Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu was outstanding in his Box-off against India’s Sachin Siwach and he won the last available quota at the men’s featherweight (57kg). The 28-year-old boxer is their first Olympian in the sport since Erkin Adylbek Uulu’s quota in 2016.

Ecuador’s Gerlon Congo made not only a brave attempt to beat Cuba’s World Championships silver medallist Fernando Arzola but due to his exceptional first and second rounds, he defeated his star opponent at the super heavyweight (+92kg).

The super heavyweight (+92kg) delivered further tight and tactical contests in Bangkok where Spain’s European Champion Ayoub Ghadfa Drissi, Ukraine’s Dmytro Lovchinskyi and Armenia’s Davit Chaloyan won their contests.
