Paro is the new IBF World super-lightweight champion

Australia’s Liam Paro (25-0) is the new IBF World super-lightweight champion.

Paro on Saturday night in Manati, Puerto Rico won via unanimous decision over the champion Subriel Matias (20-2).

“This is what dreams are made of … I’m ready to get it on,” Paro had told broadcaster DAZN after the weigh-in earlier this week. “He’s a tremendous champion, but I believe I’ve had the right prep to shock the world. I’m ready. This is my time.”

For Matias was the second title defense, and he was fighting for the first time in his country after over four and a half years.

Two judges scored the fight 116:111 in favor of Paro and one 115:112 also in favor of Australian.

Paro had a point taken off in the seventh round by referee Luis Pabon for hitting to the back of the head.

It was a contentious ruling, described by the fight commentators as “disgraceful,” “disgusting” and “ridiculous”.
