WBC expels Ryan Garcia
Mauricio Sulaiman announced on July 4 that Ryan Garcia has been expelled from any WBC activity. This follows the fighter’s two failed VADA tests, which turned his April 20 victory over Devin Haney into a no contest.
Sulaiman expressed personal concern about Garcia on July 3, urging those around him to ensure he gets help. Garcia, 25, has displayed erratic behavior, including rambling on social media and coming in over the weight limit before the Haney fight. Despite his struggles, he managed to drop Haney three times and temporarily win the bout.
VADA reported on May 1 that Garcia tested positive for Ostarine on the day before and the day of his unexpected win. On June 20, Garcia was fined $1.1 million by the New York Athletic Commission, suspended for a year, and his victory nullified. Since then, Garcia has been vocal on social media, deflecting blame.
Sulaiman stated on social media, “Exercising my authority as president of the WBC, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization. We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s well-being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse.”
