Atheyna Bylon is Panama’s first ever Olympic boxing medallist

Atheyna Bylon made a history in the Paris Olympics, the former World Champion claimed Panama’s first ever medal in this level.

Turkey’s Esra Yildiz Kahraman and Brazil’s Jucielen Romeu both qualified for the Tokyo and Paris Olympics as welland despite Romeu’s great efforts in the second round, the Turkish boxer surprisingly won their contest today.

Australia’s Charlie Senior qualified for the semi-finals in the men’s featherweight (57kg) which was the next surprise of the Olympics. His teammate, Australia’s best female boxer, Caitlin Parker also succeeded in Paris today, she reduced the fighting distance successfully against Morocco’s veteran Khadija Mardi.

Dominican Republic’s Yunior Alcantara, the flyweight (51kg) teenage sensation, shocked France’s Billal Bennama in the first round but the local favourite came back to the contest in the second with better performance. Alcantara was super quick against the tall opponent, he had nice actions but Bennama’s routine made him into the final.

France’s No.1, Sofiane Oumiha is a fantastic boxer and he controlled the first round against Canada’s Wyatt Sanford. The Canadian worked hard in the second round, he had some nice actions as well and he stopped the quick French a few times but Oumiha’s eye-catching counters guaranteed the local hero’s success in Paris.

Puerto Rico’s Ashley Ann Lozada eliminated Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova in the previous stage but Poland’s 20-year-old Julia Szeremeta found the best fighting distance against her quickly. Szeremeta dominated their quarter-final with impressive shots and she became Poland’s first Olympic boxing medallist since Wojciech Bartnik’s bronze in 1992.

Panama’s former World Champion Atheyna Bylon had difficulties in the first round against Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik but she returned to the match in the second with heavy jabs. Bylon succeeded finally on her third Olympic Games and she won this tight bout with a great finish, earning Panama’s first ever boxing medal.
