Senior, Verde and Richardson had tough quarter-final battles in the Paris Olympics

Australia’s Charlie Senior, Mexico’s Marco Verde and Great Britain’s Lewis Richardson earned their nations first boxing medal in the Paris Olympics.

Busenaz Cakiroglu is Turkey’s best weapon in the boxing venue in this Olympic Games following Surmeneli’s loss today. The Tokyo silver medallist Turkish was a hard target for Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja and she managed her pathway to the Olympic semi-final at the women’s light flyweight (50kg).

The best Aussie male boxers such as Harry Garside, Callum Peters and Teremoana Junior Teremoana all were eliminated in the previous stages but the country earned an unexpected medal in Paris. Their featherweight (57kg) boxer, Charlie Senior delivered his second big surprise in the Paris Olympics and he eliminated for the medal Tokyo’s runner-up Carlo Paalam of the Philippines.

Bulgaria’s Javier Ibanez is a precise and technician boxer who earned the gold medal at the recent European Games as well. The Bulgarian shocked his opponent, Japan’s Shudai Harada in the featherweight (57kg) and he is their first medallist in the boxing hall in Paris.

The US boxers did not perform strongly in this Olympic Games but Omari Jones impressed in the eighth competition day once again. The 22-year-old US boy landed excellent counter-punches to beat Bulgaria’s Rami Kiwan and secured his nation’s first boxing medal in Paris.

Great Britain proved excellent performance in the recent four editions of the Olympic Games but Paris is not so successful for them. Their last remaining boxer, Lewis Richardson kept their Olympic dreams alive following his tight success over Jordan’s Zeyad Eshaish at the light middleweight (71kg).

Mexico’s best amateur boxer in the recent 15 years, the Panamerican Games winner Marco Verde did not start well enough in the first minute against India’s Nishant Dev but he returned to the contest in time. The referee had to count the Indian and Verde’s second and third rounds were decisive in their light middleweight (71kg) quarter-final.
