The hero of the day, Kellie Harrington is Ireland’s first double Olympic Champion

Ireland’s Kellie Harrington made a history in the Olympic Games, she is the first boxer in the women’s lightweight (60kg) who could defend the throne.

Mexico’s Marco Verde won the Panamerican Games and the AMBC American Boxing Championships and he was the named as the best amateur boxer from his country in the previous 15 years. Verde tried to overcome his British opponent, Lewis Richardson and he made that effectively several times to win this light middleweight (71kg) semi-final which means that the Mexican will meet Uzbekistan’s Asadkhudja Muydinkhudjayev for the gold.

Turkey’s Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Busenaz Cakiroglu plans to switch that result into a gold in this Games and she is on the best way to make that happen. The Turkish light flyweight (50kg) boxer was smart against Philippines’ surprise Aira Villegas and she managed her pathway to the Olympic final where she will now meet China’s Asian Games winner Wu Yu.

Algeria’s World silver medallist Imane Khelif used her longer reach well enough in the first round against Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng and she had the advantage on the judges’ scorecards after three minutes. The Algerian welterweight (66kg) boxer eliminated the two-time World medallist Thai opponent with strong performance and she will be boxing for the title of the category with China’s Yang Liu.

Ireland’s Kellie Harrington arrived to the competition as the titleholder of the women’s lightweight (60kg) and she had the strong chance to repeat that result in Paris. The Irish veteran eliminated her main rival, Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira and she had the full concentration in the final against China’s Yang Wenlu. Harrington felt the tempo and the distance well enough in this final to win her second Olympic gold medal, defending the throne.
