In memoriam Willy De Groof, Belgium’s former Secretary General
Belgium’s Willy De Groof dedicated more than 40 years from his life to support the country’s boxing life until his death this summer.
He was the Secretary General of the Belgian Boxing Federation and a wonderful, friendly person who worked hard to build up the nation’s boxing from the darkest period into the golden era.
Mr. Willy De Groof was responsible for arranging licensing, admissions, organize competitions, tracking the results, handling the financial side of the events and the sport, furthermore for many other managing issues.
Belgium earned its historic medal at the 2021 World Boxing Championships where Victor Schelstraete claimed a bronze at the cruiserweight (86kg).
Vasile Usturoi made their next historic step when he claimed a gold medal at the 2022 European Boxing Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.
Belgium achieved one silver and one bronze medal in the 2023 European Games, which were their first podium places in the event’s history.
Record number of three Belgians qualified for the Paris Olympic Games which is the hard work of their management, coaches and the entire boxing family.
May his soul will rest in eternal peace in Belgium but we will never forget your passion for boxing.
