Singapore’s Danisha Mathialagan writes history in Ulaanbaatar

Singapore’s Danisha Mathialagan is her nation’s first ever finalist in a Mongolian international event, she advanced to the title bout at the World Boxing Cup Ulaanbaatar 2024.

England’s Ivy-Jane Smith returned to the national team with a success in Ulaanbaatar and she proved her potential for the future at the women’s bantamweight (54kg). The English girls suffered a loss to Mongolia’s seed No.1 Erdenedalai Michidmaa who will meet for the title the Paris Olympian Yesugen Oyuntsetseg.

China’s Liu Chuang arrived to the Ulaanbaatar Boxing Cup in shape and he won his third-in-a-row contests at the men’s flyweight (51kg) in Mongolia’s capital. Liu met another 22-year-old boxer, Wales’ Scott Richards and he maintained the fighting distance well to win this semi-final bout.

The men’s featherweight (57kg) delivered a Mongolian dominance, Dorjnyambuu Ganbold eliminated Enkhsaikhan Oyun-Erdene in the semi-finals today. The 21-year-old Ganbold will face for the gold with Bilgunsaikhan Kharkhuu who had a surprise success over the Asian Championships bronze medallist Lundaa Gantumur.

Japan’s Shion Nishiyama had a hard draw and tough battles against high-rated international boxers but he looked fresh enough in the semi-final against Mongolia’s Byambatsogt Tuguldur and he is now a finalist in Ulaanbaatar.

China’s Halimulati Rehemandu delivered the first KO in the event on Day2 and he knocked out his second opponent today, Mongolia’s Chingis Dashiyn at the light heavyweight (80kg). The Chinese boxer, who trains in the Xinjiang region, will now meet for the gold Japan’s Go Wakaya who had a close success over Germany’s Marcel Mangold.

Japan’s Rinka Kinoshita, the Asian Elite Champion, invested a lot of efforts to her development in the previous months and she regained her full motivation after the unsuccessful Qualifiers. She defeated Mongolia’s World medallist Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg and she will now meet Singapore’s surprise, Danisha Mathialagan in the final.
