Dalton Smith is the new EBU European super-lightweight champion

Dalton Smith (17-0, 13 KOs) to defeat Frenchman Walid Ouizza (19-2) and win the EBU European super-lightweight title.

Fight held on Saturday night in Nottingham, UK was for WBC Silver and EBU European super-light title.

Smith started fast and ended the fight inside one round.

“I mean, obviously it’s good to get it over and done with,” Smith told BoxingScene. “You’re not in any danger then, but it’s good to get the rounds in. But quicker, the better for us.

“I mean Walid Ouizza was a solid opponent in there. We expected to break him down over the second half of the fight, after probably five, six rounds. We thought he’d have come out fast, a tight guard, but from the first shot I felt him dip, I felt his legs weaken and thought I’ll stick it on him while he’s cold.”

Smith is actually number 2 in WBC ranking and win against Ouizza will put him probably in first position, so to be mandatory challenger for the world title. WBC super-lightweight title is vacant. Alberto Puello (23-0, 10 KOs) will fight Sandor Martin (42-3, 15 KO) for vacant title on March 1 in Brooklyn. And the winner is expected to fight Smith.
