Alice Pumphrey and Noelia Gutierrez won their first ever elite tournaments in La Nucia

England’s Alice Pumphrey and Spain’s Noelia Gutierrez won their first ever elite competitions in the Boxam Tournament in La Nucia today.

Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova not only eliminated Spain’s Marta Lopez del Arbol in the semi-finals of the women’s minimumweight (48kg) but she claimed the title of the Boxam. Her last opponent, Kazakhstan’s Roksana Gassymova was great in close distance but Durikova changed her strategy in time to turn back the final.

England’s U19 World Champion Alice Pumphrey made a superb debut among the elite boxers, she claimed a title at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) after beating Ukraine’s Yaroslava Marynchuk with two strong rounds.

Spain’s Noelia Gutierrez is also a debutant in the elite age group as Alice Pumphrey and she began her campaign with a gold medal at the Boxam Tournament. The 18-year-old talent was smaller than Romania’s Mihaela Badescu but she controlled the final from longer range.

Inna Statkevych won the women’s bantamweight (54kg) final against her teammate, Svitlana Umanska unanimously but after that a closer title bout was held at the featherweight (57kg). Romania’s No.1 Lacramioara Perijoc made a great finish in the third round to beat England’s Vivien Parsons.

Slovakia’s next gold medal was achieved by Miroslava Jedinakova who used her longer hands to beat Romania’s strong Claudia Nechita at the lightweight (60kg). Spain’s Mariana Soto showed her progress in the next final against England’s Ella Thompstone and she reached her career highlight with that title.

Hungary’s Luca Hamori used her world-class footwork in the first round against England’s Kayla Allen and she took the advantage on the scorecards. The Paris Olympics quarter-finalist was technically better than the aggressive English boxer and she claimed the title of the welterweight (66kg).

Ukraine’s former World bronze medallist Anastasia Chernokolenko (70kg) and England’s Youth World Champion Amber Moss-Birch won the heaviest weight categories in the Boxam Tournament.
