Surprises in the quarter-finals of the Adriatic Pearl Youth Tournament in Budva

The Adriatic Pearl Youth Tournament is one of the strongest competitions for the 17 and 18-year-old boxers and the event had several surprises in the quarter-finals.

Budva is a small city in Montenegro but famous for its boxing events, organizations next to the fantastic beaches, old town and hotels.

The city hosted the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships last October-November and only after a few months of break, an international event returned to Budva.

The boxers who were born in 2007 and in 2008 are eligible to participate in the 12 women and 13 men weight categories in Budva.

Kazakhstan’s ASBC Champion Aiym Tankibayeva was the favourite at the women’s minimumweight (48kg) but she suffered an unexpected loss to Azerbaijan’s Banuchichak Nasirli in the quarter-finals.

Greece’s Maria Georgopoulou is a great fighter and her enthusiasm supported her to beat Kazakhstan’s Sila Bibolsynkyzy at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) which is another strong category in Budva.

Serbia’s Youth World bronze medallist Nikolina Dzida started better than Turkey’s Kubra Cicek and she was able to keep the same rhythm until the last gong to win their flyweight (52kg) quarter-final.

Russia’s Diana Sikstus is a World Champion in the youth age group but she was not enough shape against Belarus’ Natalia Nasachova and her road was finished in the quarter-finals of the women’s featherweight (57kg).

Kyrgyzstan’s Junior World Champion Amantur Dzhumayev had a tough start in the preliminaries but he proved better performance in the quarter-finals to eliminate Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Akbissenov at the men’s featherweight (57kg).

Russia’s Youth World Champion Ruslan Shikhmambetov was too strong for Poland’s Kajetan Bajzert and he used not only his longer reach to win their cruiserweight (86kg) contest.
