Romeu, Dos Santos, Pereira and Machado all succeeded at the Brazilian National Championships

The Brazilians have been preparing to the Panamerican Games, their first Olympic Qualifier with full speed and the National Championships supported their active preparations.

The 21st Women’s and the 78th Men’s National Championships was held in Foz de Iguacu where Bahia state won the medal table ahead of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco and Parana state.

A World bronze medallist, Carolina De Almeida controlled the women’s light flyweight (50kg) in the Nationals but their further female stars such as the Olympian Jucielen Romeu (57kg) and another World Championships bronze finisher Barbara Maria Dos Santos (66kg) amazed in their weight classes against strong rivals.

In the absence of the World Champion Beatriz Ferreira, a younger hope, Rebeca De Lima Santos earned the title at the women’s lightweight (60kg). The experienced Tatiana Chagas (54kg) and Viviane Pereira (75kg) won the remaining women’s weight categories in the Nationals.

Ronaldo Da Silva and Michael Trindade were the main favourites at the men’s flyweight (51kg) but Wendel Barbosa won the gold medal in Foz de Iguacu.

Young Brazilians as Kaue Belini and Isaias Ribeiro Filho have brilliant techniques but the World silver medallist Wanderley Pereira had the routine to win the light heavyweight (80kg).

The Tokyo Olympian and the World Championships runner-up Keno Machado dominated the heavyweight (92kg) while the 21-year-old Yuri Falcao Dos Reis won the key final at the light welterweight (63.5kg).
