Jennifer Fernandez was the sensation of the women’s finals at Boxam Tournament
Spain’s Jennifer Fernandez delivered the main sensation in the women’s finals at the Boxam Elite Tournament in La Nucia, Spain.
Spain’s Ganda Socko Coulibaly boxed over his previous level in the semi-finals at the welterweight (67kg) and the 19-year-old talent had the brave attempt to beat Morocco’s Abdelhaq Nadir. The Moroccan veteran was better in the second round with his energetic attacks and he remained his chance alive to win this bout. The Moroccan produced an impressive final round and he will now meet for the gold medal Hungary’s Milan Petriman, a 19-year-old talent.
Spain’s Sergio Martinez had a veteran opponent in the semi-finals of the men’s light middleweight (71kg), Netherlands’ Delano James and the local boxer looked more confident from the first seconds. The young Spaniard had excellent right-handed hooks in the first and second rounds therefore, he had the advantage on the judges’ scorecards.
France’s Wassila Lkhadiri earned already a bronze medal at the 2014 European Championships and she is top shape due to the Olympic Games. The 28-year-old French had a tough final opponent, England’s Savannah Stubbley but the Paris Olympian succeeded in their meeting at the flyweight (52kg). The next French finalist, the European U22 Champion Romane Moulai lost to Italy’s Sirine Charaabi who used the long-distance tactics to win their bantamweight (54kg) final.
France’s European Games winner Amina Zidani uses the Boxam Tournament as a preparation event for the Paris 2024 Olympics and the featherweight (57kg) boxer advanced to the finals in La Nucia. Zidani and her opponent, Spain’s Jennifer Fernandez produced an equal round in the first with similar number of punches. The 28-year-old Spaniard had nice hooks in the middle of the second round and she exceeded her previous level of boxing today. Fernandez impressed in this contest and with her best ever performance she was able to beat the French No.1.
