Surprises at the male finals of the Bocskai Memorial Tournament

The male finals of the 68th Bocskai Memorial Tournament delivered some very exciting bouts especially at the featherweight, light welterweight and light middleweight.

Poland, Ukraine, Mongolia, Hungary, and Switzerland shared the women’s titles in Debrecen while Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Hungary earned the male titles.

Kazakhstan’s National Championships silver medallist experienced Askhat Zhussupov bagged the first title in the day of the men’s finals in Debrecen, he defeated Ukraine’s Andriy Tyshkovets in a hectic final.

Kazakhstan’s Asian Championships silver medallist Daniyal Sabit lost to Hungary’s Attila Bernath in a hectic bout at the flyweight (51kg). Another Hungarian, the 26-year-old Gabor Virban defeated also a Kazakh boxer, Kenzhe Muratuly at the bantamweight (54kg) and he switched his last year’s silver into a gold medal.

One of the best Kazakhs in the Bocskai Memorial Tournament was Biybars Zheksen who proved his master class of boxing against Hungary’s 19-year-old Kruzito Kovacs in the final of the men’s lightweight (60kg).

Hungary’s European Championships bronze medallist duo such as Roland Veres and Richard Kovacs both had tough finals and lost to Kazakhs in their meetings. Assylzhan Serikbay (57kg) and Yertugan Zeinullinov (63.5kg) both exceeded the expectations in these finals contests against the host nation’s best boxers.

Ukraine’s Elvin Aliyev used his counter-attacking style of boxing well enough to beat Hungary’s 19-year-old Rafael Buza, a huge prospect in the final of the welterweight (67kg). His World Champion teammate, Yuriy Zakharieiev had to do his very best to beat Kazakhstan’s Sabyrzhan Akkalykov at the light middleweight (71kg).

Ukraine’s Danilo Zhasan had a surprise success over Kazakhstan’s two-time Asian Youth Champion Temirlan Mukatayev at the cruiserweight (86kg). A Ukrainian final was held at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in Debrecen where Dmytro Lovchinskyi triumphed over his teammate, Oleksandr Hrytsiv.
