Legendary boxing matches – Legendary boxers: The first boxing match filmed ever
Author: Zizi
There are matches, which are never to be forgotten, and there are boxing icons, who are going to stay with us for eternity.
Boxing is one of the oldest sports in history. People of Egypt and Sumer fought each other thousands of years ago and we could find evidence of one of the first boxing rules from the ancient Greece from 688 BC.
Before I share the exact date with you, just stop for a moment and take a look one of the most famous inventors of all time: Thomas Edison. He invented the kinetograph (the camera) in 1891. The date is crucial because only three years later, in 1894 the first boxing match, the Mike Leonard vs. Jack Cushing fight was filmed. It means this footage is 130 years old now, which is simply amazing.
Fun fact, there was a debate which was the first fight recorded because most of the people thought the video of the Mike Leonard vs. Jack Cushing boxing match, which was in June and premiered later in August, was lost. Therefore, the public opinion thought the James Corbett vs. Peter Courtney fight was the first one, which was in the same year but in October.
Later the aforementioned footage was found and has been publicly shown through YouTube as well. The clash was six rounds long but every round was only one minute because the kinetographer could not roll for more than 60 seconds.
