Nigeria amazed with their eight gold medals at the All Africa Games

The boxing tournament of the All Africa Games finished with its finals in Accra, Ghana where 25 boxers earned their gold medals.

Altogether 64 female and 148 male boxers from 33 various countries competed in the All Africa Games in Accra, Ghana.  

Nigeria claimed eight gold medals in the boxing event of the All Africa Games and topped the medal standings in Accra. Algeria and host Ghana both achieved four gold medals in the All Africa Games with excellent performance.

DR Congo, Zambia, Morocco and Ethiopia each bagged two titles in Accra while Kenya earned one gold medal in the capital of Ghana. Fourteen nations had at least one finalist and 22 countries acquired medals in the All Africa Games.

Algeria’s Fatiha Mansouri won the first female final in Accra over Tunisia’s Wafa Hafsi but Ethiopia’s Betelhem Gayiza marked the first surprise of the Games following her success over Morocco’s Olympian Rabab Cheddar.

Algeria’s Roumaysa Boualam is one of the most experienced female boxers in Africa who has been crowned in Accra as well. Morocco’s Widad Bertal (54kg), Nigeria’s Nene Ojo (57kg), Cynthia Ogunsemilore (60kg), Blessing Oraekwe (70kg) and Patricia Mbata (75kg) were the further top female stars of the Games.

Ghana’s Mohammed Aryeetey defeated DR Congo’s Livens Tulembekwa in the first male final at the minimumweight (48kg). Amadu Mohammed earned the host nation’s second title at the men’s bantamweight (54kg) following his RSC success over Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale.

The Nigerians amazed in this All Africa Games, their Dolapo Omole dominated the featherweight (57kg), he stopped Mozambique’s Armando Sigauque. His teammate, Adam Olaore also finished his final earlier than the last gong, the heavyweight (92kg) boxer knocked out Togo’s Kevin Kuadjovi.   

Among the male favourites, Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba (51kg), Ghana’s Joseph Commey, the Olympic medallist Samuel Takyi (63.5kg), DR Congo’s duo Steve Kulenguluka Mbiya (71kg) and Peter Pita Kabeji (80kg) won their weight classes.
