Russia, Serbia, Ireland, Turkey, Bulgaria and Moldova won the female titles in Belgrade

Six nations shared the twelve women’s titles in the nith competition day at the EUBC European Elite Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

This is the first edition when both genders can compete in the same venue therefore it is a new milestone in Europe’s boxing history.

The first woman final in the championships was won by Russia’s Yulia Chumgalakova, an experienced boxer, who destroyed Serbia’s Kristina Nadj Varga’s dreams with her excellent speed at the minimumweight (48kg).

Ireland’s Shannon Sweeney was one of the new sensations in this European Championships who eliminated all of the favourites during her road to the final. The Irish light flyweight (50kg) boxer had the best strategy against Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Chukanova in the final and she celebrated a gold medal for Ireland.

Turkey’s Olympic Games silver medallist Busenaz Cakiroglu is a multiple winner in European continental events and she demonstrated her extraordinary speed against Russia’s Anastasia Kool today. The Turkish star competed at the flyweight (52kg) this time but she had the superior performance to beat the Russian teenager.

Serbia has never achieved any titles in women’s boxing in this level but their Sara Cirkovic (54kg), and two ex-Russians, Natalia Shadrina (60kg) and Kristina Kuluhova (63kg) all acquired gold medals on home soil.

Bulgaria’s Svetlana Kamenova is a fantastic boxer with beautiful technical skills who has qualified already for the Paris Olympic Games. The Bulgarian featherweight (57kg) boxer enjoyed her return in the previous two years and she knew how to beat Russia’s veteran Daria Abramova in the final.

Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli, the defending Olympic Champion had a very difficult battle against Russia’s Albina Moldazhanova at the welterweight (66kg) final but she succeeded in Belgrade where she had to do her very best.

Ireland’s European Games winner Aoife O’Rourke, Russia’s Elena Gapeshina and Moldova’s Daria Kozorez won the heaviest weight categories in Belgrade.
