Dubois stops Hrgovic, sets up Anthony Joshua fight
Daniel Dubois (21-2) stopped Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic (17-1) in eight round and thus set up a big fight against former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on September 21 in London.
Dubois won the IBF “Interim” World title on Saturday night in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia by stopping Hrgovic. Ringside doctor advised the referee to halt bout due to cuts over both of Hrgovic eyes.
Anthony Joshua was ringside in Saudi Arabia watching Dubois getting the biggest victory of career.
“I was a bit cold to start with, but I heard the advice from the corner,” Dubois said. “Once I felt a few shots, I woke up, and I was on it. In the seventh round, I was getting to him, and it was coming together. I’m just so proud of myself for this. I was rock bottom last year, but now I’m on top.
“I’ve heard Anthony Joshua is next.”
The fight was part of event Queensberry vs Matchroom, 5 vs. 5. Boxers of Queensberry won all the 5 fights.
Zhang Zhilei in the main event KO’d Deontay Wilder in fifth round, Hamza Sheeraz stooped Austin Williams in eleventh round.
Nick Ball got the WBA World featherweight title beating Raymond Ford via split decision. And Willy Hutchinson won via unanimous decision over Craig Richards and claimed WBC Silver light-heavyweight title.
