Shields wins world title in fifth weight class
Claressa Shields (15-0) knocked out WBC heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse early in second round on Saturday night, earning titles in fourth and fifth division.
Shields, two-time Olympic champion, moved up two weight classes as a light-heavyweight and the fight was for WBC World light-heavy and heavyweight titles. Also for WBF heavyweight title.
Shields prior held world titles at super-welterweight, middleweight and super-middleweight. She was undisputed in super-welterweight and middleweight.
She joined Roy Jons Jr as the only tow boxers in more then 100 years to win middleweight and heavyweight titles.
“What I’ve been able to do in my career, from the amateur to the pros, I’m definitely top five,” the 29-year-old said. “If you want to put me up there next to Michael Jordan, Kobe [Bryant], Serena Williams, Muhammad Ali. I’m definitely in that conversation.”
