Elmar Gauti Halldorsson won a historic elite contest for Iceland at the 2nd edition of the Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial Tournament began in Mostoles, Spain today.  

Spain’s Marta Lopez eliminated England’s Kelsey Oakley and she continued her winning path against her teammate, Laura Barcelo in their women’s light flyweight (50kg) quarter-final. Hungary’s Petra Mezei started well against Spain’s Carmen Gonzalez but the local opponent was able to turn back their contest in this weight class.

France’s Mayssoun Bourega, Spain’s Maria Gonzalez, Montenegro’s Bojana Gojkovic, England’s Sacha Hickey, Scotland’s Caitlin Rainey (63kg) and Kayla Allen (66kg) amazed in the next female bouts.

Moldova’s Stefan Vozneacovschii, the European Championships competitor, had a relatively difficult first round against Spain’s Jorge Iglesias but he switched his rhythm in time to turn back their light welterweight (63.5kg) contest. The Moldovan controlled the second and third rounds with attacking style of boxing and he joined the finals.

Spain’s Oier Ibarreche achieved a surprise quota through the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The Enrique Rodriguez Cal Memorial is his first event since Paris and he needed some time to adopt the rhythm against England’s strong Osama Mohamed but he succeeded in the bout of the day.

Hungary’s Soma Mester received several punches from Spain’s last year’s silver medallist Didac Lopez in the first round but he proved better performance minutes by minutes in their middleweight (75kg) quarter-final. The 23-year-old Hungarian produced an outstanding final round and he managed his pathway to the semi-finals in Mostoles.

Iceland’s Elmar Gauti Halldorsson competed in the last edition of the Boxam Tournament and he returned to Spain with upgraded skills. The Icelandic middleweight (75kg) boxer shocked Spain’s Jaume Andreu Fiol Ayovi in the first round and due to his amazing stamina, he was able to secure a victory for the developing boxing country.
