The IOC Session has approved that boxing will be part of the Olympic program in Los Angeles

The 144th IOC Session approved the proposal of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee and included boxing to the official sports program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games today.

The 144th IOC Session is holding in Costa Navarino, Greece on March 19-21 which is the most important sport meeting of the year.

The Session will be elected the new IOC President as well following Dr. Thomas Bach decided not to continue his job as the leader of the International Olympic Committee.

“I thank you for the approval of having boxing back. We can look forward to a great boxing tournament,” said IOC President Thomas Bach in the Session.

Boxing will continue its Olympic presence which is a major step forward to our sport and boxers can dream about their Olympic medals in Los Angeles 2028.

The Paris Olympic Games celebrated 6 female and 7 male champions last summer and altogether 248 boxers from 68 nations qualified in these 13 weight categories.

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee granted a provisional recognition for the World Boxing as the International Federation and a global governing body of boxing on February 26.

World Boxing has 84 members in all of the five continents based on today’s situation and its first Elite World Boxing Championships will be held in Liverpool this September.

“This is a great day for the boxers, boxing and everyone connected with our sport at every level across the world. This outcome has been achieved by a massive team effort and would not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of all of the National Federations, boxers, coaches, officials, and boxing leaders that have worked together to enable this happen,” said Mr. Boris Van der Vorst, the President of World Boxing following this decision.
