Cuba dominated the 45th Independence Cup and the KO victories delighted the crowd

The 45^th edition of the Independence Cup had fourteen superb female and male final contests in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros

One of the boxing powers, Cuba topped the team rankings with seven gold medals, all of their finalists won the title contests in the event.

The Dominican Republic’s national line-ups earned four gold, three silver and two bronze medals in this important international elite tournament.

Esther Jimenez, a local boxer from the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, stopped her teammate, Maciel Hernandez and she earned the first female title of the competition.

Guatemala’s Maria Chiroy has experience from international events since 2026 and she had the strength to stop Dominican Republic’s Celine Lopez at the women’s 65kg.

Cuba’s female duo such as Magda Masso and Yoana Rodriguez both succeeded in their finals, making new historic steps for the Caribbean boxing power. Rodriguez defeated Barbados’ veteran Kimberly Gittens who joined the international events still back in 2010.

Cuba’s promising Saidel Horta had a tough mission against the host nation’s Yohan Aguero but he succeeded in that 60kg final. Cuba’s Olympic Games winner Erislandy Alvarez not only dominated his final over Javier Valdez but he knocked out the local boy.  

Dominican Republic’s Noel Pacheco showed his extraordinary strength in the final of the men’s 80kg over Wilmer Valerio and he delivered another KO success in Santiago.

Nelson Williams delivered Cuba’s next gold medal at the men’s 90kg, but he had to do his very best against Guatemala’s new sensation, Miguel Alejandro Teo.

Cuba’s veteran superstar, the multiple World Champion and Olympic Games winner Julio Cesar La Cruz controlled all of the three rounds against Dominican Republic’s Jose Agustin Triset at the +90kg final.
