Vogels, Holden, Barone and Kaislama advanced to the quarter-finals in Kienbaum

Zoe Vogels, Rihanna Holden, Raul Barone and Leon Kaislama were among the winners at the European U17 Boxing Championships in Kienbaum, Germany on Day3.

Italy’s Serena Scalco arrived to Kienbaum as one of the favourites for the gold at the women’s 52kg but Croatia’s Paola Ugrin surprised her in the first round but she turned back their tight bout.

Two big guns met in the Round of 16 at the men’s 52kg, and the first round showed a huge tactical battle between England’s Braydon Dryer and Georgia’s Zaza Mdinaridze. The Georgian made an excellent second round which was the decisive factor between them today.

Montenegro’s Strahinja Mrdak made a great final round but he was not able to turn back his contest against Germany’s Ahmed Sarmout. Hungary’s Tamas Onodi was also in trouble against Latvia’s Leons Likovs but his impressive last round paid off in their 52kg bout.

Bulgaria’s Ivaylo Kolev won a tight opener on Day1 and he continued the winning path against Croatia’s Petar Krpan in another hectic 60kg bout. One of the favourites of this weight class, Georgia’s Beka Okruashvili suffered an unexpected loss to Italy’s Raul Barone.

Slovakia’s European Junior Champion Kristian Harasnik had a tough start in Kienbaum but he looked more confident against Romania’s Marian Chirita on Day3.

Finland’s Leon Kaislama won two out of the three rounds and the entire preliminary bout against Lithuania’s Gvidas Barsevicius while Germany’s local favourite, Beker Nemer lost to England’s Frankie Smith in the next 60kg bout.

Denmark’s first female success in the event was achieved by Tilde Faurhoj who had a strong opener against Romania’s Alice-Maria David but Azerbaijan’s Gular Huseynova also made a fantastic debut against a Ukrainian in this women’s 48kg.

Netherlands’ lone female boxer, the powerful Zoe Vogels stopped her Lithuanian opponent, Aurelija Krasadomska in a quick bout while another favourite at the 63kg, England’s Rihanna Holden had a harder contest against Croatia’s Valeria Steko.
