Zhilei Zhang Interested in Fighting Derek Chisora

China’s heavyweight star Zhilei Zhang has shown interest in a potential fight with Derek Chisora after witnessing Chisora’s recent victory over Joe Joyce. Chisora won by unanimous decision at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, a win that might revive his career. In an attempt to taunt Joyce at their weigh-in, Chisora wore a mask depicting Zhang’s face, referencing Joyce’s two prior losses to Zhang. While Joyce was visibly angered, Zhang found the mask amusing and expressed his openness to a future fight with Chisora following the bout.

“I thought it was funny,” said Zhang. “I received many messages on Friday morning here in the States because of it. Derek Chisora had previously expressed interest in fighting me in China. With his impressive win, it might now be a possibility. My main focus is ensuring I fight before the end of the year.”

Chisora, now 40, announced his intention to continue fighting, planning two more bouts before retiring. His former promoter Eddie Hearn has also mentioned Johnny Fisher as a potential opponent, giving Chisora several options, unlike Joyce. With three defeats in his last four fights, Joyce’s chances of winning a world title are diminishing, leading to calls for his retirement. However, Zhang believes this decision should be left to Joyce.

“It was a tough and entertaining fight, great for the London boxing fans,” Zhang, 41, commented. “I don’t know what’s next for Joe Joyce. He and his team need to plan their next steps. I don’t think anyone should dictate when a fighter should retire; that’s a personal decision.”
